This work is part of a larger altarpiece made for a hospital's church in the 1500s. I find it particularly moving because of Christ's very noticable poor physical state, something often disregarded in this era of art. While we are now used to seeing this kind of portrayal, especially after the now world-famous movie rendition of The Passion, as every-day-Christians we often overlook the true physical cost Jesus paid for us, and the torment He had to go through.
Wow. That was really awesome, Drew.
I like how in Irresistible Revolution he talks about how as every-day Christians we try to "tone down" the cross, or as he puts it something like "clip the lion's claws and wipe up the blood". Because really, we should boast in the cross in both it's horror and glory, even though it's not appealing to the masses.
God I just pray that you would continue working in Drew, Lord, that you would strengthen him and continue to lead him in your ways. Grant him righteousness and integrity in even greater amounts then he has right now. Thank you for such an awesome addition to my life, and keep Drewstein safe as he moves.
That's so disturbing to me! How the cross is so low and how the people are right there with him. I never imagined Christ's death being that awkward.
It's cool how Mary and John are smaller than Jesus. We must decrease so He can increase (the words written above John the Baptist in this painting).
ok, this one challenged me.
i wanted to reject it and not really study it but upon consideration i found it quite amazing.
in all honesty, i had to look this one up, and i think that is what these blogs should push us to do. we should never settle for not understanding and being dismissive.
so thank you.
the gesture of the hands. the way the size of the subjects seems to convey their importance in the picture.
you are too cool, drew.
Your intrest in art is so awesome! you are very unique and inteligent and i love it. im glad God made you that way.
yeah, when i looked at this i was like oh my goodness why would they make it look so painful and awkward. (it went right over my head) so i read what you wrote and thats so true! we try to make it seem not as painful as it was but its so important to try and understand what he went through for US!
Thank you Jesus for going through all the excrutiating pain for us. Wow, you are amazing God.
Yeah man thats such a huge thing that even i tend to look over. I meen i look at the fact that yes he died for me so i am forgiven and made new.
But to stop and really think of the pain he endured for our sake i think would grow our love for him tremendously. Thanks man. That really blessed me.
Lord i pray that you continue to increase Drews wisdom and understanding of so many overlooked mysteries. I thankyou for this gift and i ask you makeit more Lord.
